The NYT cogently captures the craziness that exists right now in Oregon politics. The Republicans who are in the minority in the Oregon legislature are going AWOL to prevent the passage of legislation by the majority Democrats. Republican State Senators are flagrantly breaking a law that says they cannot be absent without legitimate reason on 10 occasions and are supposedly banned from serving another term. Several years ago, Republicans fled to other states, and the then Governor dispatched state troopers to go retrieve them. The Legislature can’t proceed because a quorum is required. Another Republican lawmaker or lawbreaker said he won’t support the Democratic majority’s passed bills because “they’re not plainly written.” All of this happening in a state celebrated for its once bipartisan “ Oregon Way” of lawmaking and governing.
