Huge respect for The Oregonian newspaper that today marks its 175th birthday, making it the longest continuously published newspaper in the American West.
The Oregonian is doing courageous reporting on the ICE menace threatening largely Hispanics in Oregon and the Portland area. The Oregonian yesterday in a front -page story spotlighted that threat, reporting on how 560 ( largely undocumented Hispanics) were grabbed by ICE in the Portland area in October alone. Meanwhile for the estimated 270,000 who speak Spanish in their homes there is almost no local news coverage or reporting in Spanish with the exception of a daily program produced by a former anchor for the Univision channel affiliate that no longer services Portland. It is what The Oregonian describes as a “Spanish -language news desert.”
