This week marks the 10th anniversary of the murder of Russian journalist and activist Anna Politkovskaya. Her brave reporting and fearless witnessing in Chechnya gave her a world-wide reputation but also put her high up on the list of enemies of Vladimir Putin. She was assassinated on his birthday -October 7th. We still don’t know who ordered her killing? Those who shot her or conspired to shoot her have been found guilty and are serving prison sentences in Russia.
I went to pay my respects last week when I was in Moscow. I was able to get inside her apartment building and stand next to the lift where she was shot dead.
Outside the building there is only a small plaque that identifies her and what took place but says nothing about her journalistic career.
